Committee honored for memorializing murdered black veteran

A Washington organization honored a Madison County group and one of its organizers Tuesday for their efforts to commemorate the assassination of black Army officer Lemuel Penn by Athens Ku Klux Klan members 53 years ago.

Dena Watkins Chandler received the award on behalf of the Lemuel Penn Memorial Committee in a brief ceremony in the Clarke County courthouse on Tuesday in a ceremony attended by two Athens-Clarke County Superior Court judges, a former mayor of Athens and others.
