HUNG TAO CHOI MEI LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
AND ART BLOC DC PRESENTS

DRUMS OF LIBERATION

A CELEBRATION OF THE DRUM THROUGH THE STORIES OF A DOZEN REVOLUTIONARY LEADERS WHO MARCHED TO THEIR OWN BEAT.

VISUALIZED THROUGH A COLLECTION OF 12 HAND PAINTED BIG DRUMS OF THE CHINESE TRADITION, BY SOME OF THE CITIES MOST PROLIFIC GRAFFITI ARTISTS

SEPTEMBER 22 -30, 2017

THE DRUM HAS BEEN MANS TOOL FOR COMMUNICATION FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS. WHETHER ON THE FIELD OF BATTLE OR ON THE DANCE FLOOR, THE DRUM BEAT IS HARDWIRED INTO OUR BEING AND WE RESPONDS IN KIND WHEN ITS BOOM REACHES OUR EARS.

IT CAN BE SAID THAT IN TIMES OF STRUGGLE AND REVOLUTION THAT THE DRUM SERVES AS A CALL TO ARMS, ITS VOICE ECHOING IN THE MARCH TOWARDS PROGRESS AND JUSTICE. KEEPING THOSE THAT SEEK THESE THINGS IN STEP WITH THE BEAT.

LEADERS OF THESE MOVEMENTS GIVE VOICE TO THE STRUGGLES THROUGH THEIR WRITINGS AND ORATORICAL DISPLAYS WHICH IN TURN HAVE ENERGIZED THE PEOPLE AND INSPIRED CHANGE. IN TURN THEIR IDENTITIES BECOME FUSED WITH THE MOVEMENTS THEY LEAD.

THE WORK OF GRAFFITI WRITERS TOO IS FUSED TO THEIR IDENTITIES, THROUGH GRAPHIC TEXT RENDERING AND EFFECT TECHNIQUES, GRAFFITI WRITERS TRANSFORM BARE SPACE INTO STYLIZED PROCLAMATIONS OF PERSONAL SELF-IDENTITY.

DRUMS OF LIBERATION CHALLENGES ITS ARTISTS TO FUSE THE IDENTITY OF A REVOLUTIONARY LEADER TO THE SURFACE OF THE DRUM, THUS GIVING THE DRUM AN IDENTITY AND A VOICE FOR WHOM IT HONORS WHILE LEADING OUR COMMUNITIES MARCH INTO THE FUTURE.

ABOUT THE DRUMS:

The Chinese Big Drum provides inspiration and direction for the Chinese lion and dragon dancers movements. The drum is made of solid wood with a playing surface made of high grade cow hide to produce a rich even tone. The circumference is ringed with two rolls of metal nails with two carry rings on each side. Four springs are attached to the inside of the drum to give the drum greater resonance. The drum is played with two wooden sticks. Hung Tao Choy Mei Leadership Institute uses these drums for lion and dragon dance performances and also synchronized drumming performances including anywhere from eight to twenty four drums.
