 Fighting to Free Foreclosure

Fighting Foreclosure National Conference During CBC Weekend

The media headlines about the devastating impact on families and communities from the real estate crisis of 2008 may have subsided, but foreclosures continue.  Many still suffer and will continue to do so as lenders now begin to press forward on homes that have been lingering in the pre-foreclosure stages.  Realty Trac’s October 2015 report shows a 100% increase in pre-foreclosure filings and a 66.7% spike in auctions. Frustrated by the foreclosure mediation law put in place by the D.C. Council (the Saving DC Homes From Foreclosure Act of 2010), lenders are turning to the D.C. Superior Court.  In April of 2014, the Court created a new judicial foreclosure process.  On any given day, at least a hundred cases are moved through a courtroom with standing room only. Most of these homeowners and tenants will face eviction and potential homelessness.

This Conference is designed to provide practical information to attorneys, realtors and other professionals; and the public to help them protect and defend themselves against foreclosures and evictions. Housing counselors, banks and panels of industry experts will be present. Additionally, a Dinner Gala with musical and other entertainment is planned for the evening.  Donations and proceeds from the Dinner Gala will be used to establish a BBDC Fund to help D.C. residents with foreclosure and eviction problems.

The Conference and evening Gala will help BBDC continue its work, especially its planned “Fighting Foreclosure Project.”  Among other activities, this Project will educate homeowners about their rights when facing foreclosure, (More than 3,000 in the District of Columbia just this year!), eviction and homelessness; will train attorneys on foreclosure litigation in exchange for their promise to take on foreclosure cases; and will harness the information about the myriad programs designed to help those facing foreclosure and make it more available to the public.  BBDC is a 501(c)3  tax exempt organization.
