Charles Spencer, the FBI’s newest special agent in charge in Jacksonville, can recall the day the scope of the agency’s mission changed.
Spencer, 45, was among the first agents on scene at the Pentagon in Washington after an airliner hijacked by terrorists plowed into the stronghold Sept. 11, 2001. He worked in the morgue processing victims’ bodies.
From that point forward, he said the FBI expanded its reach, growing from its origins as a federal law enforcement agency tracking down criminals to become a vital cog in the U.S. intelligence-gathering system as well.
