Hope sought after change; notables come together for race relations forum

The historians, politicians and religious leaders gathered for a forum on race and church Saturday called for both vigilance and optimism in the midst of change.

Claflin University President Dr. Henry N. Tisdale welcomed the group with the thoughts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., saying “The real fight is going to be the fight for real equality and genuine economic justice.

“That’s the fight that we’re in today.”

The forum, sponsored by Trinity United Methodist Church, explored “Race Relations and the Role of the Church: Then and Now.” It was held on the Claflin campus.
