Jacksonville civil rights leader, legislator Arnett Girardeau, dies at age 88
Arnett Girardeau, a retired Jacksonville dentist and legislator inducted this year into the Florida Civil Rights Hall of Fame, died Thursday. He was 88.
His family confirmed his passing on Friday. Funeral arrangements have not been finalized.
U.S. Rep. Al Lawson, who also served in the Senate, was among the first to publicly acknowledge Mr. Girardeau’s death, recognizing him as one of the first African-Americans to serve in the Senate and someone who championed his hometown of Jacksonville.
