A plea deal by former U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown’s longtime aide has thrown her defense against federal fraud charges into chaos but hasn’t changed her insistence she’s innocent, her lawyer told a judge Thursday.
“For seven months now, the fundamental premise of Ms. Brown’s defense was that she and Mr. Simmons are not guilty,” attorney James W. Smith III said during a hearing a day after Brown’s longtime chief of staff, Ronnie Simmons, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and implicated his former boss.
