Rep. Chris Van Hollen replaces retiring Sen. Barbara Mikulski

Rep. Chris Van Hollen defeated state Delegate Kathy Szeliga in a race to elect Maryland’s newest U.S. senator.


NBC News and the Associated Press projected Van Hollen as the winner shortly after 8 p.m.
Van Hollen replaces Sen. Barbara Mikulski, who announced last year she would retire after 30 years on the job.
