NY Reps. Katko, Maloney aim to boost tick-borne illness research

With increasing Lyme disease and Powassan virus cases, two upstate New York congressmen want to raise awareness about tick-borne illnesses. 

A bill introduced by U.S. Reps. John Katko and Sean Patrick Maloney would establish grants for states to set up tick identification programs. The programs would enable people to submit photos of ticks.

Vector-borne biologists would use the photos to identify the tick and provide individuals with details about the insect. The information would include the species, an estimate of whether the tick is carrying a disease, best practices if you’ve encountered a tick and how to prevent the …
