Witnesses testify they trusted Corrine Brown that donations would aid students
A lineup of successful business executives, philanthropists and political players testified in federal court Thursday that they cut checks worth thousands of dollars — sometimes tens of thousands — to a sham charity for one reason: They trusted former U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown.
Brown — on trial facing conspiracy and fraud charges related to the bogus charity, One Door for Education — sometimes made requests for big money from those donors with promises that it would go to help needy students. Sometimes donors sent checks to the group simply because they were told to do so.
